One of the most exciting emerging forms of regenerative medicine for soft tissue injuries is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP injections are an increasingly popular alternative to surgery and are getting great results for patients of all ages. The physicians at The Performance & Health Institute have been practicing regenerative medicine for decades and together have helped patients in the New Jersey area live pain-free.

No matter your age, activity level or condition, no one should have to live with pain. At The Performance & Health Institute, we've used PRP to treat a wide range of patients in all phases of life, including:

  • Professional Athletes
  • Youth/Amateur Athletes
  • "Weekend Warriors"
  • Generally Active People
  • People of any age with chronic joint, tendon, or ligament pain

Conditions Considered for Treatment with PRP Therapy:

Shoulder: Rotator Cuff Tendinitis or Tear, Rotator Cuff Impingement Syndrome or Bursitis, Bicipital Tendinitis, Labrum Tears, Arthritis, Instability

Wrist/Hand: Arthritis, Wrist/Finger Tendinitis, Ligament Tears or dysfunction of the fingers

Elbow: Medial and Lateral Epicondylitis (tennis & golfers elbow)

Hip: Illiotibial Band Tendinitis (ITB syndrome), Psoas Tendinitis and bursitis, Greater Trochanteric Bursitis, Hip Labrum Tears, Piriformis Syndrome, Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction, Arthritis.

Knee: Patellar Tendinitis, Patellar Femoral Syndrome, Chondromalacia Patella, Partially Torn or Strained Major Ligaments of Knee (ACL/LCL/MCL), Meniscus Tear, Arthritis, Patellar Instability

Ankle/Foot: Achilles Tendinitis, Peroneal Tendinitis, Arthritis, Recurrent Ankle Sprains, other Foot or Ankle Tendinitis

What is Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a safe, effective and all natural way to heal damaged joints and soft tissue in order to alleviate chronic pain. PRP consists of a small sample of your own blood, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and then injected into the injured area.

Benefits of PRP Therapy

  • PRP uses the power of your own body to heal
  • non surgical approach
  • rejuvenating your body's natural healing process
  • no rejection, all natural therapy
  • minimal to zero downtime
  • heal injuries quicker

How does PRP Therapy Help?

  • The body's first response to soft tissue injury is to deliver platelet cells.
  • Packed with growth and healing factors, platelets initiate repair and attract the critical assistance of stem cells.
  • PRP therapy's natural healing process intensifies the body's efforts by delivering a higher concentration of platelets.
  • To create PRP therapy, a small sample of your blood is drawn (similar to a lab test sample) and placed in a centrifuge that spins that blood at high speeds, separating the platelets from the other components.
  • The concentrated platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into and around the point of injury, jump-starting and significantly strengthening the body's natural healing signal.
  • Because your own blood is used, there is no risk of a transmissible infection and a very low risk of allergic reaction.

How Long Does It Take?

The procedure takes approximately one hour, including preparation and recovery time. Performed safely at our Norwood, New Jersey location, PRP therapy relieves pain without the risks of surgery, general anesthesia, or hospital stays and without prolonged recovery. Most people return to their jobs or usual activities right after the procedure!

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Regenerative medicine is not a "quick fix" and is designed to promote long-term healing of the injured tissue. While most patients only require one injection, the regeneration of collagen takes 4-6 months and may require multiple injections. Pain and functional recovery will be assess 2-3 weeks after the injection to determine further therapy needs. The total number of treatments you will need depends on your age, the area being treated and the amount of pain you were experiencing before starting therapy.

Is There Any Pain?

Some patients report swelling and stiffness or mild to moderate discomfort lasting a few hours after the injection (ice multiple times after injection). This is a normal response and is a sign that the treatment is working. Over time, the affected area will begin to heal and strengthen and you will experience considerably less pain.

What are the Expected Results?

Initial improvement may be seen within a few weeks, gradually increasing as the healing progresses. PRP therapy is highly effective at relieving pain and returning patients to their normal lives. Both ultrasound and MRI images have shown definitive tissue repair after PRP therapy, confirming the healing process.
